1997 is, for us, a special year in more ways than one. Firstly, the Principality is celebrating 700 years of the Grimaldi Dynasty. It is paying homage to the tenacity, ingenuity and independent spirit which inspired the Lords and Princes of Monaco and has resulted in our country's becoming that which welcomes you today.
1997 is also the 40th anniversary of the creation and organisation of our Festival. In the course of these 40 years, thanks to the same qualities of ingenuity and perseverance, hundreds of volunters have joined the original founders of the Festival : Guy BROUSSE, Max BROUSSE et René CELLARIO. All have shared a passion for the theatre and its spirit of comradeship. They have combined their efforts in conceiving and organising the World Festival of Monaco. On this anniversary year, homage should be paid to their creativity, determination and vitality. Even difficult times, they paved the way to enable us to be here with you today.
In 40 years, the Festival will have made it possible for 214 troupes of players to represent 52 different countries here in the Principality. Thus, it will have brought together some 3,000 actors, directors, technicians and writers to practise their techniques and their understanding of the theatre. This will also have given them the opportunity to discuss the organising of amateur theatre in their respective countries.
Today the MONDIAL DU THEATRE has taken on a planetary dimension, following the example of AITA/IATA. It represents a picture of amateur theatre world-wide. It is indeed a Festival for the lovers of Theatre. It reflects their talent and their passion for drama and it is the showcase for their tremendous efforts.
We welcome all who, motivated by the same spirit of tolerance and understanding, share the same enthusiasm. May you impart your love for the Theatre to each and every member of the audience !!

Commissaire Général
